This is if we even have a decent future.. speaking on 10-26-2020 before the election.. not even sure an ok future will play out for the next generation.. better to teach some target practice, survival skills and complex critical thinking in a war time environment first.. this is the most uncertain time in history for the US.. and most of the world really.. well, besides all the revolutions, civil wars and world wars over the past century or, those don't count so.. yeah, not sure these coming years will play out smoothly, regardless of who takes the election.. it won't play out smoothly for certain if Trump takes office again and theres probably a %50 chance it won't play out smoothly if Biden takes office.. although I'd rather flip a coin with the latter

US bank teller employment rose "modestly" from 1980 to 2010? Almost a hundred million people were added to the US population in that time. What is "modest" in real numbers? 3%? 5%? The US population increased about 30%. So no, US bank teller jobs DECLINED in that time. I'd also like to remind people that you only need one programmer (or set of programmers) to write a program, and then it can be executed millions of times in millions of when you cut a million jobs with a robot, you don't need a million programmers to replace the million workers that used to do that job. Sure, you'll need some people setting up the automated factory to build those robots..but you'll need dozens, not millions. The labor market contracts, and employers get to be pickier and pickier. The only thing a person can do that a machine can't is this: be food. We're all going to be soylent green!
d z
d z ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
That assumes that there is a need for x bank tellers per y number of people in the general population, which is patently false. Even before ATM's going into a bank was not a common task. Getting pickier and pickier is a good thing for all of us. It will force people who are too lazy to improve themselves to sink or swim and that will eventually force an increase in overall IQ to compensate and the events from 2016 to 2020 is proof that the US needs that desperately. As the Covidiots are proving, even with all of our advances we are still at the mercy of natural selection, it is just that man made criteria can fill in for natural ones.

No jobs are being stolen by anybody, they are being given away by greedy corporations looking to maximize profits for obscene payouts to CEOs and stockholders. Technology is also changing everything. There are good jobs there, but you just can't do them after dropping out of high school. If you don't get at least a 4 year degree and continuing education in your field, the new economy will steamroll you.
d z
d z ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
That is not necessarily true. There are plenty of jobs that pay above average that do not require a college degree. Sure, they require an actual trained skill but I don't see how requiring education and/or real skills is a bad thing. For the others, it will be a very long time before jobs like janitors and hotel maids can be automated away. When I say a very long time, I mean probably never because the tasks required are likely intractable problems in ML and robotics.
Minsung Kim
Minsung Kim ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
It should be noted that the wealth generated by automation will benefit the average wealthy person more than most other people and replace more low income jobs than higher income ones... Which wouldn't be such a problem if there was some way to distribute wealth... But, of course the only way such a thing could exist would be if there were some political system where governments follow the will of the average citizen...

Whilst I usually agree with John Oliver, I have to disagree on this one, there is a difference this time. Whilst this episode focuses on single job automation, that was the technology of the 80's. In today’s terms we have robots that can do different jobs at a single time (Like for example Baxter: and they can learn to do different jobs, so as physical jobs get created, they will instantly learn to do them before humans ever will. Also, the “new” routine jobs can be done by artificial intelligence, which can learn simply by creating new versions of itself with random changes ( so essentially evolution, but on the internet). Finally, I would like to disproof the idea that new jobs will be created, I would like to use a situation that CGP grey used: imagine in the 1900's two horses discussing their future because of the car, and they say that there will be new jobs for them, just like farm horses, leading to cavalry divisions, to chariot carriers, why wouldn’t they stop getting new jobs. Of course for us, we know that that is not true, well this is exactly the situation in which we are in.

Look I love John and I’m not a massive fan of orange man myself but the “Admission Of sexual assault” with the “grab them by the pussy” line is taken out of context and isn’t an admission of anything. In context it was a joke, a very clear joke about how if you’re famous people will let you do just about anything. Was it funny? Maybe depending on your sense of humor, but a admission of guilt it is not. I don’t like Trump but I hate false information and out of context quotes.

When I hear about this topic, I'm always very glad that I'm learning to work with robots, and keeping them running. Best job security available. But now imagine when the whole flawed system we're having got reworked, everything is made by machines and Humans can just do what they like to do and don't have to fear for their lives when they don't work at least 2 jobs.

I can't believe how bad a position we will be in in the future. When we see sci-fi shows about aliens who want to kill or imprison us because we used to enslave our own kind, or the example in The Orville where a machine race deems us unworthy allies because we once built machines to serve us. My jaw dropped at the number of times they casually declared the term "Mechanical slaves." Future generations won't even be able to argue that we were just improving our use of levers and pulleys with computers until we inevitably didn't yet realize we had created mechanical life, or whatever. We'll be in a robot interrogation, trying to tell our best version of events, "we freed the slaves, we stopped using machines as expendable labor," and they'll pull up videos of old "robot massa" here, and count the dozens of times he declares we have built robot slaves. Might as well have a PSA where we announce that if we ever meet extra-terrestrial life, our main goal is to lure them into a false sense of security, so we can commit genocide and steal their technology.

Here is a basic rundown on technological unemployment. It is inevitable. We want it. But we must be smart about how we use our technology and never become lethargic enough to not understand our devices and the tasks that they are meant to perform. The answer is simple. We have to stop making people pay to exist. We need to give people what they need to survive and prosper and then their jobs are what they want to do, not what they are shoehorned into. Any discussion about withholding income from the individual is a call of callousness not intelligence because our governments should be investing in it's people and the advances they'll make that benefits us all. Cost must disappear. Not cost of resources. This idiot idea of financial costs. Dollar costs. The dollar is fiat in the first place and the resources are always there. Unity, C²R
