Just few days ago, Florida released 750 mil mosquitoes edited with Crispr to counter yellow fever, dengue & zika. A Chinese scientist already has modified germline i.e. permanently changed DNA of twin daughters of HIV positive couple to give the daughters protection against HIV. How long are we going to ignore progress of human species as a whole just for sake of ethics and morality ? Its been far too long, science has suffered enough at the hands of religion and politics.

I have a genetic condition called Friedreichs Ataxia, gene therapy is arguably the closest to a cure we have. The scary thing is that myself and other patients are needed for trials, but you can only undergo the procedure once. If I do this trial and they don't give me enough I'd still have the disease and never have the chance to be cured. Personally I think genetic engineering is pretty cool for being like, yno, the only hope I have to not to slowly keep losing my mobility and motor skills

I didn't need to hear the story of the tick fucking the mouse. However, there is something more fundamental that this brings up: If you remove the genes that lead to someone getting Alzheimers or Diabetes, are they still the same person. If you give a human genes to be smarter, stronger, and longer lived than any other human, then are they still human? Where do you draw the line between improving something and making it into a completely different thing?

In my view the people who live with Dwarfism and the likes know deep down that if and/or when this becomes available and they have kids that have the same traits as them that that was just as much as an active choice as changing it. Should you make everyone look the same? No. Should you level the playing field? No. Should you make use biologically immortal. Yes.

The stupidity of that "App" analogy lies in the fact that apps on a device are generally isolated. For a proper analogy, look at Wordpress. A clusterfuck of extensions created by semi-professionals and installed by people who don't know what they're doing, resulting in hundreds of thousands of lines of code trying to jam themselves into every page load, resulting in horrific load times, countless errors and untold vulnerabilities.
Ichijo Festival
Ichijo Festival ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
The analogy gets even better, because much like Wordpress, the human body wasn't made for even half of the things it's been forced to do, and while the results can be good with some serious work, it is and always will be more flawed and inefficient than if it'd been custom made by an intelligent creator.

Just think how it happens in 2020 when Trump fails to control the highly contagious new virus that seemingly kills about 10% of those getting ill. When the population gets sick so quickly that the hospitals are in danger of failing being over run with by patients so doctors must triage who is treated at all. And when the people are afraid of getting sick and do not go back to work or buy in stores or travel or use restaurants, the economy fails, especially when millions are out of work and can't pay the rent or put food on the table, but Trump fails to release funds to stabilize even with unemployment checks believing the workers should go back to work immediately and all children and colleges return to school and no unemployment needed now, or they won't go back to work. But the virus just re-emerges with a vengeance and the population is afraid to go back and a president that orders all to return to work. And the president says the Chinese started the virus and released it to the world and China says the US started the virus and brought it to China. A CRISPR probably created the virus. (CRISPR) exist in China and the US. There is no way to ascertain which statement is true or false, so it is left as is. In addition a black man was murdered by police in Minneapolis when on camera. The arrested man is held down by 3, with 1 police kneeling on his neck for 9 minutes as the man calls out he can't breathe, and calls out to his mother, and then he stops breathing. And an ambulance takes his body. Protest erupts all over the US and then in other countries. The cities had the demonstrations so democrats responsible for failure of law & order, and the president called the protesters and those looting, monsters and lawlessness & terrorists. The president threatened the democrats, saying they will get no funds from federal government. Think how this played out with Trump is president. Trump has dedicated followers which include some Republicans. Most of what he says is not true and you can not argue with someone that does not believe in truth or acknowledge any truth basis. His followers want a dictatorship I think. In his country the only truth is what Trump agrees to. Who would want a country where you would wait until Trump agreed.

Genetic diversity is essential for a species to survive. Trying to make everyone “perfect” is actually harmful. Plus we can’t know all of what is “good” for us.
Politics
Politics ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
The reason genetic diversity is essential is because inbreeding causes defects, but if you control the genes of your offspring that is actually an irrelevant factor. At that point a brother and sister could theoretically have healthy offspring. Also there are a lot of obviously good things for us, like : -health -intelligence -strenght -compassion and cooperative spirit -slower aging -vigour Aesthetics are more subjective and there are grey areas, but there are a number of traits no sane person would refuse having more of.

The chinese scientist reacted the way he did because you talked about stupid religious concerns. Man is God, you idiots.
Viki Ai
Viki Ai 2 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
To be fair, the Chinese scientist's reaction to the "Playing God" line is likely more due to the fact that the concept of, and cultural baggage associated with, the Christian concept of God over there is pretty thin. It would be like someone from a remote tribe who only recently discovered the rest of the world asking a US scientist about whether these 'animal husbandry' and 'crop farming' things should not be left in the hands of his local interpretation of a deity. Seriously, the Western (and particularly US) tendency for religious belief is honestly looked on as _rather primitive_ over there, in most circles. The whole concept carried in the question was a bit embarrassing to him, in a 'I really don't want to offend your rather primitive beliefs here by answering that directly" way. I'd expect a similar reaction from many Chinese given such a question in whatever their field is, be it advanced genomics or sewage management engineering. (I'm not Chinese, so would happily respond to such a culturally loaded question by pointing out, in the most tactless and confrontational language available to me, that the US and the over-recycled primitive belief systems it uses to control the sub-sapient portion of its population, are not, in fact, the baseline for human existence, experience, or morality - thankfully! ) Also note, however, that (If this is the scientist I think it is), he went on to be internationally (including in China) and quite rightfully, disgraced for stepping well over the currently accepted (irrespective of any God or Gods or their abscence) line in his research.

on your gene editing show I would like to comment that when certain vaccines were discovered they solved the problem of some devistating diseases but in turn allowed our population to skyrocket into unsustainable proportions. Which allowed China's one baby policy and our Opiold and drug epidemic to kill off as many people as they could (just to name a few). So I ask, as saving that one baby you examples, how many of us will be denied a life without pain and suffering for that one child. Who is science really working for? Can't these scientists find better jobs?

Yeah this will sound mean but fuck that "proud" dwarf woman. Dwarfism is a fucked up genetic disorder that screws up your body in such a way it simply isn't anywhere near "optimal" function. It doesn't just make you small, it screws up your whole skeleton and muscular structure. The only reason she feels like it's "normal" is because WE DONT HAVE A FIX FOR DWARFISM so she has to DEAL WITH IT and the human mind is capable of a lot of bullshit to cope with problems it can't solve.

what complicates or simplifies or neither or both it more is that some stuff ending is a good thing, and some stuff continuing to be the same is a good thing, and both are bad things in many ways too, and some new stuff is good and some new stuff is bad, and all things are somewhat bad and good for this or that many times over, right, or not, or what, etc...most species that ever ever existed no longer do, or so that theory goes anyway, change and constancy, constancy and change...the ingredients are there, but as it pertains to quantity and quality of life, what be the recipe, eh?! rad vid, thanks for posting it.
