Americans expect their air, water, and land to be clean. In the Trump Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is intently focused on meeting these expectations. This focus has paid off. Since 2017, criteria air pollutant emissions have fallen 7 percent, making air quality the best it’s been since modern recordkeeping began.

We're already seeing many of the coral reefs bleaching and dying off....unfortunately I don't have faith that we will change in anyway until it becomes too late. We can't even care about one another yet, what makes any of us think we can get humanity together to care about saving Earth. The Religious have no intention of helping at all as they think they will be saved by a deity and so motivates them to fight climate support, deny its real, and not care much about how much pollution they create themselves

The Green New Deal does NOT go far enough. The republicans who directly represent the interests of massive corporations and therefore won't allow this to happen hold all the power in the government, and the democrats are useless and won't do anything about it while their corporate donors control them like puppets. Even if by some miracle it does become law, as you've said yourself, big business still controls the state, not the democratic will of the people. Theres no way to make sure it's properly enforced. The state is addicted to oil. 63% of greenhouse gases come from just 90 companies! As long as the capitalism, the state, money, the profit motive and undemocratic workplaces exist, our planet is doomed. We need revolution NOW!

For 100% Renewable energy , you will need to invent a battery that brakes the laws of physics. Edit: If you think that we can tackle climate change without Nuclear playing a big roll, you are dreaming. And AOC and proponents of the green new deal want to close nuclear power plants ( with most likely will be replaced with fossil fuels)
Tug Brice
Tug Brice 19 ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
@Olti Hajdaraj Batteries are not the only way to store energy. One of my favorite ways is water pumping. Build two reservoirs, one at a higher altitude, one at a lower altitude. When you have extra energy, you use it to pump water into the higher reservoir. When you need energy, you run water from the higher into the lower, turning a turbine (like a hydro plant). Batteries are "direct" storage (storing the electricity itself), but storing work (like using the electricity generated to move water so it can do work later) is another, sometimes even more effective way of storing energy. And trust me. You speak English way better than I speak your native language. You are doing just fine man.
Olti Hajdaraj
Olti Hajdaraj 19 ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
Tug Brice Yes the problem is storage and supply, just like you mention the power grid is bild for direkt supply because storage off that much energy is almost impossible because batteries as a storage device are pretty shit compared to Gas and Oil. It would take Tesla one of largest and best battery manufacturers in the world hundreds of years to bild enough batteries storage for one day of power needs. And the battery are packed with energy at the moment, the technology we use right now are close to the limits of fysiks ( wich is what I was referring to in my comment), The battery’s in elopement are theoretical at best and would take more and more time then we have. Every time a Nuclear plant closes down, the emissions for that country ( looking at Germany) they go up. In my country nuclear gives 45% of our energy, so then politicians talk about closing them, investors back off and see nuclear as a lost cause. john mentioned Nuclear then he was talking about things to improve. With new technology we can better use waste and expect cost to go down. I am not saying only nuclear and nothing else but renewables big problem of battery is that they cant keep getting better and better to keep up with economic growth. fossil fuels companies are losing money but they are held to a different standard in regrades of safety and pollution, so its not a fair game. In my opinion we need Nuclear and Renewables to hold us in-till we get fusion running( but that is long in the future). edit: had a hard time keeping a constant strain of thought I hope u can understand. Good video for reference papost.info/slow/v/momYroGegW-IiaM
Tug Brice
Tug Brice 19 ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
Okay, first of all, when they talk about 100% renewable energy, they don't mean perpetual motion or violating thermodynamics. They mean supplying 100% of the energy needs of the nation with renewable energy. Second, nuclear energy is not renewable. Third, we have been able to supply the energy needs of the entire WORLD with solar since the 1980s. The problem isn't that renewable energy isn't ready, the problem has been that it isn't profitable. When talking about renewable energy, the main problems are storage and supply. Because the current power grid operates on an instant need basis, there is very little or no storage. Electricity is used instantly and is generated as needed. Most of the work that the power companies do is keeping the balance of power supplied to power consumed steady. Too little power and you get black or brownouts. Too much power and you blow up the grid. This is possible because they can generate power as needed, usually by burning more fossil fuels or running more water through the turbines. Renewables can't generate power on demand like that, so the power has to be stored when it is generated and used when it is needed. There are only so many ways to effectively store power, thanks to the laws of thermodynamics, which is why the power grid is built the way it is. It will cost a lot of money to build effective storage systems and build a new grid that can accommodate the kind of flow that goes with that kind of system, but in the long run it will save more money than it costs. But most executives and shareholders aren't interested in long term profits. They are interested in right now profits. Which is why this hasn't been done yet.

I'm glad this time that he mentioned nuclear power, and it is true that we have MUCH better civilian reactors, although there is NO reliable evidence of harm from any of those presently in the whole of North America. Gigantic wind whirlygigs HAVE killed some people, and hundreds or even thousands of eagles, which are nowhere near as numerous as humans.
albert rogers
albert rogers 29 ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
The trouble with relying upon recent sunshine-- wind, heliostats, solar PV, rain, snow, and biomass to get rid of emissions from burning fossil solar is not that we'd have to get rid of aircraft, motorcars, and eating meat. We' also have to get rid of at least 5,000 million humans. the Industrial Revolution. That happened because all of these resources, biomass being a category that includes sled dogs, oxen, horses, animal fat, peasants, serfs, and slaves, is that they were inadequate, even wind on the sails of ships at sea, for 1,000 million humans. The alarm about fossil CO₂ emissions concerns both their thermodynamic and their chemical nature. When John spoke about "nuclear waste" he failed to compare it with "combustion waste", which in the USA is annually about 130 million solid tons of poisonous solids and slush from coal, and thousands of millions of tons of CO₂ and even more acidic gases, whereas the annual production of slightly used nuclear fuel that 1950s design reactors can't use, is 25 hundred tons.
albert rogers
albert rogers 29 ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
In the 1960s, ORNL designed a reactor that can renew the supply of fissile uranium, from thorium, AND it is inherently meltdown-immune. In the 1980s, the Integral Fast-neutron Reactor (IFR) could similarly produce and consume fissile plutonium from the common isotope of uranium. If deliberately run as a Breeder, it could produce surplus reactor fuel. Only an ignorant idiot would try to use it to make bombs, because the plutonium contains the isotope Pu-240, which is safe in a reactor with U-238, but liable to explode while you're making your bomb, if there's only plutonium.

@KingintheMountain The real issue with solar and wind is they need nature to cooperate and it does not always do so. Also, battery power to store this energy is done with heavy mining of materials to make batteries. Not to mention that solar panels are only 20% efficient in gathering energy from the sun. Not easy to rely on solar and wind for all our energy, maybe geothermal with be the answer if they work on this.

It's a glaring indictment of the country's collective intellect that the *only* way that a scientist such as Bill Nye gets their message any kind of reception is by resorting to profanities. The information that he and other scientists have been trying to convey about negative climate impact is just as factual and just as imperative sans the curse words, but curse words--for some stupid reason--are the only way that gets some individuals to take the warnings about negative climate impact seriously.

The Canadian carbon tax doesn't make any sense. "The rebates are anticipated to exceed the increased....costs for about 70% of households." The idea behind taxing carbon is to dis-incentivize polluting. If 70% of households actually get more money back than they pay in carbon taxes, it could actually do the opposite. The other motivation for collecting a carbon tax SHOULD be to use that money to create more efficient power grids and otherwise reduce carbon emissions. Make it more expensive drive an individual car in the city, and make public transportation more efficient and less inconvenient and you might get people to take the bus or the train. And the ill-dressed farmer with the bad poetry was pointing out the role of fossil fuels in producing the food that all of us need to eat. If we want to keep eating, we'll probably have to make up for farmers' carbon use somewhere else until somebody figures out a way to power combines and tractors with solar power or hydrogen fuel cells or something. And good luck getting a farmer to abandon his $200,000 combine in favor of a $300,000 solar-powered one that doesn't work very well on cloudy days.
