My mom had that hip. But the doctor installed it wrong, so instead of rubbing, the socket just wasn't attached, so she had horrible pain for 2 years, doctors told her it was her back and wanted to do spinal surgery, and when they finally found out it was the hip, she had escaped cobalt poisoning. So, two bad luck events got canceled out to one less-bad bad.

I love USA , we get great medical innovations from them and human testing. USA has found the geneva convention loophole where they can do human trials. How else would we know that metal on metal hips turn into cheese. Thanks USA for your sacrifice. Sacrificing their own citizens for the greater good for the good of the world for the humanity.

Thank you John Oliver, the warning Ad on the ERCP procedure and duodenal scopes is real and so is the deadly bacteria they harbor because they can not be sterilized, only “high level disinfected”... this brought such national attention that we now have a single use one on the market. Aka bacteria free! So if you are reading this and your loved one needs to have an ercp procedure, ask your doctor if they can use a “single-use duodenalscope.

Poor baby, getting put on blast for being hideous when hes barely an infant, if hes ugly now I can't imagine how terrible his high school days will be. All jokes aside, a simple "viewer discretion" at the start of the show would suffice, like it always has. If people watched anyway and their eyes caught a glimpse of something than thats on them.

As a biomedical engineering student, it hurts me to see patients get hurt. However, the regulation work is just not that simple. In order to produce scientifically sound result, and catch all potential problems, a clinical trial can and probably should last years, and cost is easily in the tens of millions of dollars. Compound the development failure rate, it would be hard for companies to justify investing into innovation. Further, 510(k) allows a lot of less critical devices to be cleared. When a company produce a similar enough device to a existing device, and the failure of the device is not a cause of immediate or serious health concern, it would be unfair to require a clinical trial for it. So getting rid of 510(k) completely would block off a lot if innovations. That's not to say 510(k) is a perfect process. It allows new, low risk device that shows "significant equivalence" to an existing device to be cleared for marketing. However, the term "significance equivalence" needs a lot more enforcement mechanism. For example, I would argue the metal-on-metal hip replacement is not "significantly equivalent" to previous devices. Metal-on-plastic hip replacement allows the harder metal to wear down the softer polymer, and shed harmless particles. However, metal-on-metal hip doesn't have the same mechanism to prevent shedding of metallic particles. So 510(k) does need to be revised to allow FDA to better regulate cleared devices, and ensure they are safe and effective.

So patients in Murica are suffering and/or dying, because the government agency tasked with supervising the development of medical equipment is lazy and incompetent, and companies are more interested in making money than in helping people. What a *huge* surprise! That makes me really happy to live in Europe, where the EU has agonizingly detailed (and sometimes really annoying) rules and guidelines for everything, from toilet paper to car tyres, from filling material for pillows to ingredient lists on food packages, and yes ... they actually make sure your pacemaker doesn't shock you to death and your artificial hip doesn't make your flesh rot.

Fun fact, i used to work for a company in the field of prosthetics. There we had yearly fda audits in order to legally sell those to the US. Funner fact those audits where rigorous and a joke at the same time. The took appart one line of products but the company was allowed to choose which one, meaning that wether all the products met fda standards was entirely up to the companies goodwill. that said, lawsuits because a prosthetic leg malfunctioned are not fun for big companies so theyll make sure it doesnt happen.

Metal rods saved my life when I had them implanted on my spine when I was 12. First, the surgery very nearly killed me. Second, the rods detached from my spine a year and a half later and poked through my back, and I had to have part of each rod removed. Lastly, in large part because of these complications, I've had debilitating chronic back pain every day since I was 16...coming up on 20 years now. I'm still alive, but my life is DEFINITELY not worth everything I've been through. Think long and hard (if you can) before getting implants. I can't have my rods removed now because the bone of my spine has grown around what remains fused to my spine. If you can survive and have a decent life without the implant, don't get it. If you can't, do tons of research before getting it implanted. Be safe.

I'd gotten essure done about ten years ago. It was wonderful, and I was beyond thrilled. My super heavy and long periods were suddenly significantly lighter to the point of being negligible and way shorter. Around seven years later, all of a sudden, I was getting sharp pains in my abdomen, and my periods started getting heavy again, but at least they didn't last much longer. I started google searching to see what could be wrong (ugh, I know, terrible idea), and found a Facebook group about all the problems with Essure. I had no idea that it had been recalled, and assumed that it was a fake, overly sensational group. But, I kept reading what other women were saying. Almost all of them were expressing the same symptoms I had, and they'd gotten it around the same time I had. Some had even gotten pregnant while still having the device in them! I haven't had any other issues (that I know of), but I often wonder what could be wrong that I don't know about, and am slightly appalled that I had to find out via a Facebook group.

I talked to a lady in Milwaukee who claimed that her daughter and another woman's daughter were the subject of experimental use of unapproved medical devices at a hospital. One child died, and there were supposedly many others who were unwittingly experimented on, and she claimed there was a big cover-up after the damage was done to her daughter. The name starts with C and is a synonym for kids.

@Sam Wert No, Sam. We have a troll (you) trying to provoke me (fat chance of that), and I was just sharing an anecdotal story that a woman really did tell me a couple of years ago. Sure, the woman could've been batshit crazy and it could've all been a lie, but I have no way to say it was or wasn't. It cannot be called a theory, however, because this is someone's supposedly factual story, which is why I used words like "claimed." A theory is something a third party comes up with to explain something. The story I've related doesn't come in the form of a theory - it's a story, not a hypothesis. Why did I share it? Because it is directly related to John's piece on medical devices. According to this woman, one of the daughters (I don't recall if it was hers or the other mother's) actually had a medical device for the heart surgically implanted in her because the medical team claimed she needed it, and her mother was never informed. Later, she forcefully removed her daughter from the offending hospital and went to another hospital. During the course of care there, that device was removed and it was discovered that it wasn't FDA approved (she didn't say anything about "cleared" so I don't know if it was). Supposedly, members of the team from that hospital tried to get in to take that device but were prevented by the new hospital's staff. If you want to call that a wild conspiracy theory, feel free. I really don't care what you think.

Had a gyno push me into using an IUD, had pain from the moment it was implanted and my gyno just kept telling me it would go away as I got used to it. 2 years later had a new urogyno who gladly removed it and found it was implanted without showing so in imaging. He told me he denies implanting all IUDs and removes 5-10 a month surgically. When I told him the pressure put on me to use it, he got my old gynos license pulled. My IUD was simply pulled out, I couldn't imagine it being implanted so deep to need surgery with the amount of pain mine caused.

Yup. Me and my implanted (currently non-working and damaged) medical device feel this acutely right now. It was presented to me as perfectly normal by my doctors so I didn’t question it. And it worked relatively well, so I didn’t question it. It wasn’t until things started going wrong that I discovered ALL of this AFTER the device was already IN me with leads in my SPINAL COLUMN. Good on you John! And let me tell you, when it’s in you, even if it helps, you ARE aware of it at all times because something unnatural in your body. Even if it’s not currently hurting it’s rarely comfortable. However I have a friend who requires his own medical implant to keep his heart beating normally - and it’s changed his life. (With his only true drawback being how long it takes to get through airport security with it.) The real problem with these wonderful ideas is that there is no oversight by medical professionals the way any medication would be tested done intentionally for people to make the most amount of money the fastest. Including paying doctors to put them in patients, while not being honest to the doctors about them being tested in any way to give realistic statistics for patients’ safety. These are companies trying to turn a profit as a business, who hire regular people to shop these around. NOT physicians. If you want more information on this, there’s a wonderful book titled, “The Dangers Within Us.” that goes more in detail. An interview with the author on NPR will give a great overview of you google it.

I had a Depuy knee replacement done after surgery to remove cancer in my bone in 2017. 10 years later, the rod broke in half while I was walking. No one would take my case BC it wasn't part of a larger lawsuit case for cement issues or malpractice by physicians. I almost lost my leg, and will have to amputate when this replacement fatigues which doctors expect to be in 20 years. So I will be learning how to get around as an amputee at 50. Fun...
